Larger scale C19th Chinese Export Trade leather and brass-bound polychrome painted camphor-wood trunk .
Brass-bound and brass-studded scarlet or maroon leather-covered camphor travelling trunk with banded borders of polychrome stylised trailing floral and scroll-work decoration . The ends each fitted with a brass carrying-handle , the front with a shield-shaped brass key escutcheon and with a ring handle to the hinged lid .
The top and lid having a sun-faded colour and patina, the polychrome painted decoration having achieved an ivory hue . The centre of the lid with studded cartouche-shaped reserve having a panel of painted floral decoration within, the edges with a deep border of corresponding decoration. The lid fitted with 3 original brass hinges and a brass lock (key not present) .
The reverse having a plain leather panel without painted decoration.
The brass binding and studs with an aged ‘bronze’ oxidised.colour , patina and original surface.
In excellent original ‘fresh-to-market’ condition, having only minor losses to the brass-ware and studs , and having historic scuffs and wear to the leather commensurate with age , use and purpose.
A highly decorative trunk of good , large scale and proportions, for use perhaps as a reception , coffee table or ottoman in a decorative scheme.
Trunks of this type were produced in China for export to Europe, in addition to their practical and decorative qualities, the use of scented camphor wood was utilised as a deterrent and repellent to insects and infestation when use for storage and travel.
