Description

Large scale C19th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir carved ‘prato verde’ serpentine marble sculpture reduction copy , after the antique, known as “Il Porcellino” or The Uffizi Boar.
Of unusually large scale and proportions with great presence , the well-carved green serpentine marble boar being a copy of the antique Hellenistic Pentelic marble Greek original 2nd-1st century AD exhibited in The Uffizi Museum, Florence, Italy .
The original was found in Rome and transported to Florence by the Medici in the mid C16th , thence in the Ducal collections before being displayed in the classical galleries of The Uffizi. IThe original measures 95 cms in height.
A further copy of the Boar was cast in bronze and sculpted as a fountain by the baroque sculptor Pietro Tacca in 1634 , and was sited in the Mercato Nuovo’ in Florence, Italy. A later copy now stands there where it is a huge tourist attraction.
Excellent attention to detail with realistic carved detail. The evocative sculpture has a ‘dry’ surface and has achieved a pleasing sage-green hue . Has some minor losses and historic repairs, though completely stable and in obstensively uncompromised condition.
