Description

Pair of decorative mid C19th black and gilt japanned tin tea-canister lamp bases with Chinese-style gilded decoration.
Atmospherically worn surfaces with gilded Chinoiserie decoration having stylised Chinese characters and red painted highlights. The canister lids having been fixed and fitted with lamp-holders , in need of rewiring (which can be completed to client’s specifications).
The versos having applied oval manufacturers trade labels of “Bartlett & Son, Welch Back , Bristol”. The firm of John Bartlett , born London 1825 , are recorded as “Japanners of Grocer’s Tea Canisters” and by 1852 were working in Welsh or Welch Back in Bristol.
A scarce pair of black japanned gilt-decorated tea canister lamps with wear and losses to the surface, retaining great decorative appeal.
