Large late C19th French carved statuary marble bust study of Madame Juliette Recamier after Joseph Chinard .
Well-sculpted large-scale study after the original by Joseph Chinard ( 1756-1813 ) of the French socialite and acclaimed beauty, Juliette Recamier . The subject is depicted half-length in a coy pose , clutching her garments or shawl across her breast, her hair held in a bandeau with a comb in her tumbling curls.
In excellent original condition, with some minor marks and stains to the surface. One finger of one hand with a minor historic repair. Raised on an integral square socle base .
This large scale marble sculpture having great presence and decorative quality, in addition to the intriguing back-story of the subject.
In fresh to the market condition, having been purchased from a local country-house in Worcestershire.
* Madame Juliette Recamier ( 1777-1849) was considered by many to be the most beautiful and charming woman of her time . She was famed for her manners , conversation , intelligence, kind demeanour and beauty , an invitation to her salon was considered a great honour in French society. The most distinguished and well-educated men of the day frequented her house . Visitors included Lucien Bonaparte, , Moreau and Bernadotte.
