Description

Pair of early C19th William IV period gilt bronze candlesticks in the form of heraldic cranes by Thomas Abbott of Birmingham.
Raised on cast rock-work bases the well-modelled standing cranes shown with coronets around their necks holding branches in their beaks supporting cast foliate rococo-inspired candle-holder sconces and drip-pans . The underside of the bases with cast-iron balancing weights stamped “ABBOTT “.
In excellent original condition with a consistent surface and patina . Have minor drill holes where previously been adapted as electric lamp bases .
*The brass founding firm of Thomas Abbott had registered premises in Moor St., Birmingham and are documented as producing two similar types of these candlesticks, the others being modelled as herons holding fish . A pair of these being held in the collections of the V & A Museum, London, where they are described as being produced in mercury gilded copper alloy .
