Description

Early George III Chippendale-period C18th mahogany chest of drawers.
Outstanding colour and originality, made in Northern counties of England.
Reeded quarter column corners unto chequer-strung inlaid blocks, beneath carved deep-fluted moulded edge. The use of this form of stringing could point to a possible attribution to the Gillows workshops in Lancaster, where such a feature "stringing to two little pedestals" is described and discussed on long-case clock cases of this period in the Gillows archive p398 (plate484) "Gillows of Lancaster and London" by Susan E. Stuart.
In addition , a chest-on-chest attributed to Robert and Richard Gillow (plate D2 i) p.329 also features the same fluted /reeded quarter columns which is a typical regional feature. Such an attribution could be further argued by the use of such superior quality timber.
Standing on compressed ogee-section bracket feet. All original brass-ware, rococo swan-neck handles and escutcheons ,retaining partial original mercury-gilded finish. Cock-beaded ,oak-lined drawers and 'red-wash' back-boards.
Wonderful rich patina and untouched condition.
Cleaned and waxed.
