Description

C19th George IV period rosewood library or centre table . Directly attributable design to Gillows of Lancaster , top quality table fitted 2 mahogany-lined drawers with brass locks and key, panelled 'dummy' drawers to reverse. Elegant twin-column end supports with stylish carved collar above .The legs with Gillows design carved knees and 'dolphin-mask' feet with concealed/recessed brass castors. Carved and turned stretcher base ,with 'reel-and-bead' carved mould to frieze . All these stylistic features are shown on impressed and attributed Gillows tables both in the firm's drawings in their 'Lancaster Estimate Sketch Book' held in The City of Westminster Archive ,and illustrated and discussed in "Gillows of Lancaster and London " by Susan E .Stuart.( see Vol. I plate nos 274 & 275 p.268. + plate GG36 p.382). Though unsigned and without an impressed stamp, the quality of design, selection of timber and build-quality ,lead us directly to a Gillow attribution. Good original condition , nice gently-faded colour to strikingly-figured top, rich patina to base with no breaks, repairs or losses. Cleaned and waxed.
