Description

Early C20th alabaster architectural model of the Taj Mahal.
Carved white alabaster model with coloured highlights and pen-work detail ,of the iconic white marble mausoleum in Agra , India. Completed in 1648 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved third wife Mumtaz Mahal, a Persian princess who died in child-birth. Intricately-made scale model standing upon a decorated plinth base .Decorated to simulate the jali-work and inlaid marble and precious stones of the original. The base , dome and minarets all decorated and incised to simulate stone-work construction. The bronze finial above the centre dome of the tomb is in the shape of a crescent moon , a typical Islamic symbol whose horns point to the heavens. The style of Mughal architecture combines both traditional Hindustani and Persian decorative elements.
This model though having suffered somewhat by nature of its fragility , nonetheless is a great decorative table/desk ornament . Has chips and old repairs and some losses , but still represents a stunning depiction of perhaps the most famous and arresting image of the Indian sub-continent.
