Description

Late C19th terracotta library bust study of the infamous Roman Emperor "Caracalla". The Emperor born Lucius Septimus Bassianus, was Roman Emperor (211-217 AD) and thence known as Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus, and nick-named "Caracalla" after the hooded Gallic cloak he wore and popularised. This famous image modelled here in terracotta , captures the infamous scowl and suspicious glare of the subject, and depicts him as a soldier wearing his cloak with short-cropped hair ,beard and an aggressive expression . The cloak is patinated to resemble verdegris bronze , whilst the portrait head and socle are neutral terracotta. The bust study is known as of the 'Sole-Ruler' type ,dating to the period after Caracalla murdered his brother and co-emperor ,Geta. During his period as Emperor he was infamous for his ruthless approach and the numerous assassinations and eliminations of his rivals and perceived enemies. Versions of this image can be found in the great collections and museums of the world, including The Capitoline,Rome ; Museo Nazionale ,Naples; The Vatican Museum and the British Museum. In excellent condition.
