Description

Ci9th Italian 'Grand Tour' souvenir ,after the antique , carved marble reduction of the sarcophagus from the Burial chamber of the Scipios . A small-scale white statuary carrara marble model of the Roman sarcophagus tomb of the 3rd Century AD consul Lucius Cornelius Barbatus , of the Scipioni family . A Roman consul and war hero whose leadership led to victory over the Etruscans at the battle near Volterra in 298 BC . The Tombs of the Scipios discovered in 1614 , in a vineyard near Porta Capena on the Via Appia, Rome.
Well-carved desk-top model with dentil , rosette, tryglyph and guttae classical decoration elements , the 'lid' with foliage scrolll ends . Fully inscribed to the leading edge and body of the tomb. "Cornelius C.N.F . Scipio " and Latin text describing the deeds of this famous scion of the patrician Scipioni family of Ancient Rome. (Full text and translation available)
Raised upon a black marble block plinth . No chips,repairs or damage . Some minor staining /discolouration to left hand top scroll of tomb 'lid'. Constructed in one piece with 'fixed' lid.
The original carved in grey tufa stone, now preserved in the Vatican's Museo Pio Clementino Rome, having been rediscovered in 1780.
