Description

Late C19th/early C20th "Cippolino" marble column. Superior quality Italian marble column/pedestal with strikingly-figured Greek or Italian "Cippolino " turned body . The 4 section multi-stepped plinth base with a contrasting purple-veined white turned 'breccia' marble foot which matches the 'breccia' turned top section supporting the vibrant green cipollino marble slab top. The well-turned stem with gently swollen and tapering body , this application of a convex curve is a term known as 'entasis' when referring to architectural form such as this .It is an indication of the quality and fore-thought of the mason who conceived this pedestal column.
Cipollina marble ("onion-stone") was a variety of marble used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, quarried on the island of Euboea in Greece . Also found in Italy around Lucca , this green Cippolino Verde Apuano has a distinctive green /white crystalline vein. Cippolini marbles were used extensively in Rome during the Imperial period in villas , temples and for sculptural purposes.
Stunning combination of colours combining in a highly decorative column ,which would provide an important base for a bronze or marble sculpture.
