Late C19th Japanese bronze sculptural group of reclining deer with figure astride . Good scale Meiji period (1868-1912) group of a sacred Sika deer lying prone with a Buddhist attendant on its back with fanning palm leaf. Deer are regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion of Japan and allowed to roam freely in the Buddhist Temple sites of the city of Nara. The serenely depicted deer with naturalistically cast antlers is shown with the smiling figure upon its back dressed in traditional sashed robes , the left hand in an apparent Buddhistic pose.
Excellent colour and condition .
Cast in 3 pieces , the detachable figure with loose palm leaf frond.
