Description

Late C19th New Zealand indigenous specimen-wood veneered table top . Octagonal table top with parquetry segmented veneers with central concentric star design . Constructed using all New Zealand native timber specimens ,and fully inscribed with titles to the reverse corresponding to the veneered areas. Finely-made with quartered reserves and chevron and line inlay detail .
'Thumb' moulded edge.
(The reverse also has the inscription 3-10-0 which we assume to be the pre-decimal price in sterling ie. 3 pounds 10 shillings.)
Specimens listed include: Kohekohe, Totara Burr, Kauri, Pohutukawa, "Stinking wood" etc .
Made in the style and manner of the Bohemian emigre Anton Sueffert (1815-1887) ,the leading and most celebrated exponent of this type of cabinet-making.
Shows signs to underside of frame-work of a previous base .
Many of these tables were manufactured as tops only and were exported to England where they were later-mounted on tripod bases.
