Description

Rare early C19th Regency period papier-mâché tray decorated with fox-hunting scene.
Featuring a rare subject matter for a tray of this type and period , painted with a wooded landscape scene with traditional scarlet-clad and top-hatted riders on horse-back following a pack of hounds in pursuit of a fleeing fox , which is depicted on the crest of the bank.
The broad raised edge of the tray decorated with continuous gilt bamboo decoration, of rectangular shape with gently rounded corners . The dished centre with gilded surround.
The reverse stamped with the impressed mark for the rare and little-known makers of "Dyson & Benson, London" and surmounted by a Crown . Dyson and Benson's "Japan Tin and Paper Tray Manufactory " in London closed in 1823 following bankruptcy. The inventory of the bankruptcy sale included "highly finished Salvers, Trays and waiters in sizes..."
The painting in excellent condition with no losses or damage .
Very minor age crackulature / crazing to the original varnished surface as to be expected.
The original colours retaining a bright hue .
