Interesting C19th Italian carved alabaster sculpture of a seated Poodle .
Well -executed study of a seated Standard Poodle , in the early C18th style . Shown with its mouth open and head to one side , the coat shown with traditional 'Continental Clip' with shaven hind-quarters and pomponed legs .
Good attention to detail with fur and skin definition , well-carved snout ,eyes and teeth ,the legs with good carved paw detail.
Carved from white and grey veined alabaster, mounted on a fixed ,canted-corner plinth base with cavetto sides.
Some evidence of minor historic repairs ,and some historic cracks and fissures to the stone.
Standard Poodles were breed principally in Germany during the C15th ,but their popularity spread throughout Europe , traditionally used as water-dogs and retrievers in the sporting field .
