Description

Late C19th Italian 'Grand Tour ' souvenir carved serpentine marble study of "Il Porcellino" or the Ufizzi boar.
Skilfully carved from Italian green serpentine marble .
The original bronze sculpture was cast by Baroque Master Pietro Tacca (1577-1640) after a Hellenistic marble original now on display in the Ufizzi Museum, Florence, Italy. Tacca's bronze can now be seen in the Museo Bardini , Palazzo Mozzi. Traditionally coins were fed to to the boar for good luck and rubbing the snout ensured a return to Florence, hence the polished nose. The boar is based on the Calydonian boar of Greek Mythology.
A bronze casting now stands in the Mercato Nuovo close by the Ponte Vecchio in Florence , and is one of the city's tourist attractions .
Nice small-scale copy with excellent attention to detail with well-carved features , faithfully copying the original.
In excellent condition, with no damage ,chips or repairs.
