Late C17th / early C18th Japanese Edo period Imari pattern porcelain vase.
Fine Edo period porcelain vase circa 1700 , painted with all-round decoration featuring exotic birds and phoenixes , pines trees , butterflies, landscapes and chrysanthemum flowers. The 'shoulders' decorated with blue and white trailing foliate detail and shaped cartouches or reserves with vases of flowers. Featuring the distinctive bold colour palette of the period ,with strong iron-red , gold, cobalt and inky blue painting .
Exotic porcelain vases such as this , from the distant Orient , were highly fashionable and expensive imports during this period , and can be seen in some of the grandest and most important houses and museums of Europe. As now even , their striking colours , glamour and exoticism must have caused a sensation upon arrival . Often placed within fireplace hearths during the summer months to provide colour and decoration whilst fires were not being set .
Excellent condition, with minor rubbing . No breaks , cracks or repairs .
