Description
Fine pair of early C19th George IV period rosewood fold-over card tables in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.
Exceptional quality pair of elegant figured rosewood D-shaped card or gaming tables of superb original colour and condition. The fold-over tops with crimson baize felt lined interiors , swivelling to form a stable playing surface and revealing figured and polished cedar-wood compartments beneath. Fitted with original lacquered brass hinges .
The break-front sectioned friezes with shaped scrolled ends , the edges of the tops and quatrefoil concave sided bases all decorated with carved 'split-reel' mouldings. Raised upon tapering and stepped square-section columns . The bases with ribbed or gadrooned lobed feet with concealed castors beneath with turned solid rosewood wheels.
Fully- veneered in freestanding form with a high grade of finely figured rosewood, which has achieved a rich patina. Retaining their original surface and 'skin' with only minor marks and crackle deterioration to the polish .
The quality of both the construction and selection of timber , together with the use of the mouldings and their design, favourably compare these tables to recognised and marked examples by the esteemed cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London ,and lead us to the probability of an attribution to them .
Fine and rare pair of decorative and practical tables with which to add symmetry and style to a room .
