Description

Fine quality early C19th French Empire ormolu-mounted mahogany commode with fossilised Belgian marble top.
Superior mahogany Empire-design commode chest fitted with 4 long drawers, comprising one 'blind' frieze drawer , the lower 3 with original circular ormolu handles and finely-cast escutcheons . The oak-lined drawers each with quality hand-cut dove-tail joints . The lock are non-functioning and have been replaced at some time with brass 'dummy' plates .
Flanked with free-standing ormolu-mounted mahogany columns , the whole standing on cylindrical feet to the front and shaped rectangular feet to the rear . The ormolu caps of the columns with finely cast grape and vine detail, the base of the columns with cast detail ring mounts.
The ormolu bronze mounts retaining their original gilded surface which has achieved a gentle, aged patination. The selected 'flame' mahogany veneers of rich patina , all upon a panelled oak carcass. Panelled back and panelled top beneath the marble slab .
The top with and angular moulded edge supporting a Belgian fossilised marble top which has an historic 'invisible' repaired fracture across the centre, which has been expertly repaired and braced and strengthened with iron fillets .
In excellent original condition with a rich patina and retaining its original 'skin' . The commode has been sympathetically cleaned and waxed in our workshops .
A substantial and imposing Empire commode of sophisticated design.
