Description

Fine and rare early C19th papier-mâché tray painted with a landscape hunting scene .
Highly decorative papier-mâché dished rectangular tray with a charming painted scene depicting huntsmen and hounds in full-cry across an idyllic English country landscape. The horsemen in full gallop behind a pack of fox-hounds in the lead. The huntsmen dressed in traditional 'hunting pinks' and top-hats , negotiating obstacles and ditches. The hilly landscape with good detail featuring , a stream , wood , houses and a windmill in the background.
The edge painted with floral scroll designs and gilt details. The rear with a full stamp for the acclaimed manufacturers of "Jennens & Bettridge , London & Birmingham ".
Jennens and Bettridge established in Birmingham in 1815 and later in London in 1837 , were highly regarded for producing high quality papier-mâché wares.
In excellent original condition. The colours in good bright condition. Minor crazing or crackulature to the paint and minor rubbing and crazing to the reverse commensurate with age.
