C19th gilded bronze classical 'Grand Tour' souvenir after the antique , of Athena.
Classically posed standing figure in gilded bronze of the Greek goddess of war Athena. Known to the Romans as Minerva , the goddess is shown in her distinctive helmet , cuirass and draped cloak , holding a spear in her right hand .
Raised on a black marble plinth base . Some minor wear and rubbing to the gilding commensurate with age and handling .
Athena , or Athena , daughter of Zeus, was worshipped as the goddess of justice, warfare , mathematics, wisdom , courage , civilisation and skill .
Rare example in gilded bronze for a 'Grand Tour' or classical collection.
