Description

Pair of mid C19th Italian specimen marble desk-top paperweights / pocket-watch stands of pyramid form .
Smart 'stacked' triangular pyramid-shaped specimen marble paperweights each with a cast-brass hook of flower-head design on which to suspend a pocket-watch or perhaps an item of jewellery .
Eleven coloured marble specimens tapering from a 'St.Anne' grey marble base the underside edge of which with a gentle bevel.
The very tips of the top specimen of each pyramid with a tiny historic chip .
This pair of Italian marble paperweights were probably conceived as ‘’Grand Tour” souvenirs , the shape being derived from the ‘Pyramid of Cestius’ in Rome , the tomb of Gaius Cestius . The period of Roman history of the conquest of Egypt, saw a huge rise in fashionable popularity for all things Egyptian .
Such items were made for sale to wealthy tourists completing the ‘Grand Tour’ of the sights and sites of classical Europe.
