Description

Early C19th early C19th late George III period mahogany hall or footman's chair .
Elegant late Georgian period mahogany single chair with a beautifully-executed painted aristocratic armorial device panel in the back.
The panel depicts a lion stood posed upon the defeated body of a dragon or mythological beast , apparently above a red-and-white striped Baronet's bar . We have not identified the noble family to whom this crest belongs.
The shaped octagonal tablet back above a waisted body , and the solid mahogany seat all with reeded channeling, the overall design drawing from classical Ancient Greek inspiration. The distinctive columnar fore-legs and overall design of the Grecian form give a strong attribution to the architect and designer Sir Robert Smirke (1780- 1867) .
Sir Robert Smirke was one of the leaders of Greek Revival architecture, his important works include the main block and facade of the British Museum.
This stylish and sophisticated design chair has historic repairs to the rear legs but is stable and in sound usable condition.
Superb grade of mahogany timber which has achieved a rich colour and patination.
