Description

Pair of late C19th Kashmiri Indian papier-mâché candlesticks.
Highly decorative and colourful pair of Kashmiri region candlesticks which have been fitted as lamps at some stage . Turned candle nozzle tops and tapering swollen stems onto a spreading circular foot .
Typical regional multi flower-head and paisley design. Papier-mâché work of this type was traditionally produced at Srinagar in the Northern Indian region of Kashmir for export to the Western market. The technique was a handicraft brought to the region by Muslims from Persia in the C15th.
