Pair of C19th Italian bronze ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bust studies of the Roman Emperors Caracalla and Julius Caesar.
Well-cast and detailed desk-top size bronze studies of the Roman Emperors, Caracalla and Julius Caesar. Both depicted wearing tunics or togas across their shoulders, each with an inscribed name-plate and raised on a circular socle base and mounted upon a carrara marble block.
Nicknamed ‘Caracalla’ after his habitual wearing of the eponymous Gallic hooded tunic , Lucius Septimius Bassianus , was Roman Emperor from 198 -217 . Known from history for his brutal and tyrannical rule , he was considered a soldier first and an emperor second .
Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BC- 44 BC ) was a politician and general of the late Roman republic , who rose to become master of Rome as a consul and dictator. He was murdered infamously by conspirators on the Ides of March 15th 44 BC .
Decorative and academic bust studies of the two celebrated Roman statesmen and leaders , in excellent original condition with a consistent dark patination.
