Description

C18th George III period mahogany knife-box with original fitted interior .
Shaped serpentine-fronted Georgian mahogany knife or cutlery box of traditional sloping-top form , retaining its original compartmentalised interior. The interior with ‘barbers pole’ and chequered string inlay between the division slots and the underside of the lid with an inlaid ‘compass’ star .
The front face fitted with original brass ring handle and brass key escutcheon . Fitted with original brass hinges to the lid . Well-figured ‘fiddle back’ mahogany throughout, retaining the original polished surface and ‘skin’.
Minor losses to the ‘cock-beaded’ moulding, but crucially in untouched and original ‘as found’ , countryhouse, fresh-to-market condition. No splits or damage .
The lid held in the ‘open’ position by a brass folding arm , probably a later addition to prevent damage .
Boxes of this type were produced in the Georgian period to store expensive silver and steel cutlery and knives , and designed to stand upon a sideboard or serving table in a formal dining room .
