Description

Early C19th Regency period mahogany seven-drawer ‘Wellington’ chest .
Superior quality ‘ Wellington’ chest of seven graduated drawers constructed from a fine grade of ‘plum pudding’ mahogany. Fitted with a traditional vertical hinged mahogany locking bar and original brass ‘Bramah Patent’ lock supplied with 2 steel keys .
Fitted with all original turned knob pull handles with a central detail . The drawers all with highest quality mahogany linings , corner dust-beads and finest precision hand-cut ‘dove-tail’ joints .
Raised on a plinth base . The gently-rounded corner top with an overhanging back to fit flush to a wall over a traditional skirting board . The reverse with original panelled back-boards .
The top with minor historic scratches and a faint water-mark stain , but crucially retaining the original polish and surface throughout.
An elegant , well-proportioned chest of restrained design using the best quality of cabinet-making skills and materials , possibly by the esteemed firm of Gillows of Lancaster, though unsigned.
The compact width and proportions portray a strong architectural presence almost with the appearance and scale of a pillar or column, and would provide a perfect platform for displaying a bust or sculpture in addition to the storage capacity.
Excellent condition with a rich colour and patina.
