Description

Magnificent ‘matched pair’ of late C19th Chinese Qing Dynasty carved hardwood ‘hongmu’ throne-style armchairs.
A closely-matched pair of profusely carved Chinese hardwood armchairs with multiple intertwined coiled dragon details. The carved and pierced arched panel backs with superbly detailed mythical dragon carving with the central ‘flaming pearl of wisdom‘ motif .
The arms carved as scaly-bodied dragons with open-mouthed terminals . The shaped panelled seats with serpentine outline fronts above friezes of carved and pierced decoration . Raised on shaped fore-legs with mask detail and dragon’s claw feet , the side friezes and arm supports with corresponding panels of deeply carved decoration. The legs joined beneath the seat by stretchers to provide strength and stability.
A highly decorative and exotic pair of armchairs in excellent original condition with a rich colour and patina to the dense hardwood.
Minor differences in scale and height and variations to carving but forming an impressive pair of armchairs, possibly conceived in different scales for male and female appropriation.
