Description

Mid C19th Derbyshire specimen marble inlaid table-top thermometer.
Manufactured in the Ashbourne area of Derbyshire, the Ashford black limestone arch-top body set with an inlaid band of specimen marble samples around the mercury-filled thermometer set on an engraved bone scale .
Raised on a stepped plinth base with bun feet.
* The Ashbourne area of Derbyshire became a centre for producing this type of marble inlaid item during the late C18th and C19th , using both local and imported stone specimens , imitating the pietra dura industry of Italy.
In excellent original condition, with only minor splits to corners of the engraved bone scale.
