Pair of decorative mid C19th brass and cast-iron Sphinx andirons.
Well-modelled pair of polished brass Sphinxes mounted on sloping-sided rectangular cast-iron plinth bases . Probably designed to sit within a fire-place hearth , but would work equally as well on a mantelpiece or console table .
The undersides bearing Victorian �kite� registration marks . Produced to reflect the fashionable taste for �Egyptomania� and the desire to reflect the discoveries of the ancient Kingdom and perhaps the victory of Nelson in the �Battle of the Nile� against Napoleon�s navy.
