Pair of large and impressive late C19th/early C20th Chinese carved wood and polychrome paint and gilt decorated 'Dogs of Foo'. Highly decorative pair of Chinese Temple guardian 'Shishi' lion dogs , raised on carved detail rectangular plinth bases. Well-carved detail with original multi-coloured polychrome paint decoration . An opposing and imposing pair, depicting the male and female guardian dogs with their paws raised upon symbolistic spheres and pup respectively. The male paw on the sphere representing supremacy over the world , whilst the restraining female paw on the pup, represents nurture.
The mythical beasts convey their power through detailed bared teeth and vicious claws , whilst their backs display dragon-like spinal scales. The bodies are depicted with coarse , coiled fur ,and the necks wear decorative collars hung with bells and symbols .
The fierce expressions and ferocious presence are well presented ,with multiple colours, gilding and symbolic decorative motifs, including auspicious bats.
Statues of guardian lions have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial Palaces , Imperial tombs and Government offices and homes of the wealthy, since the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220) and were believed to have powerful mythic protective powers.
Some losses to painted decoration commensurate with age and wear.
Some shrinkage cracks to bodies , and minor old losses and some historic repairs.
A stunning pair of Guardian lion dogs for an entrance-hall or decorative scheme.

Brilliantly carved 'mother of pearl ' or nacre sea-shells with continuous intricate richly detailed designs all over the interior nacre-shell lustre surfaces. The contrasting landscape scenes depicting fantastical Chinese life with mountains and pagodas , one with warriors at battle to the centre. One shell with a beautifully detailed carved fish to the edge.
Displayed upon their original detachable carved blackwood or hardwood stands, with flower-stem and peony flower-head decoration.
The quality of the workmanship being the finest of its type we have seen .

Of free-standing oblong form , useful-scale Chinese pale-coloured hardwood table , possibly cedar. The 'floating panel' top with an historic repaired crack to centre. The bases of the square-section legs with various historic repairs and splices , undoubtedly alluding to it's age and regard . The stepped open-fretted friezes with carved details ,and each with unusual carved baluster archaic vase-shaped motif inserts . The base of the legs with a carved inverted foot and united with stretchers.
A rare pale colour and patina with attractive grain and lustre.
Various marks and stains to top commensurate with age ,use and purpose.

Strong ,robust construction of uncomplicated and simplified early period-style design .
Some minor water-marks to seat edges, but of good rich colour and patina. Minor shrinkage gaps to panel seats , no splits .

Supported on three 'umbrella' style brackets onto a carved columnar shaft with lobed bulbous section, terminating in three swept legs with carved and incised decoration onto stylised carved claw feet. Heavy quality 'hongmu' timber of rich dark colour and intensity . A scarce table design for Chinese furniture , of a form not seen before by us .Cleaned and waxed.

Late C19th/ early C20th Chinese carved box-wood ceremonial ruyi sceptre.
Intricately carved box-wood sceptre with deeply detailed carving depicting multiple Imperial dragons heads with scaled body details. Carved from richly honey-coloured box-wood with superb skill and excellent attention to detail . The centre with 7 open-mouthed dragon heads surrounding and chasing the symbolic flaming pearl of wisdom.
In Chinese culture a Ruyi , literally "as desired or as you wish" , is a curved decorative object that serves as a ceremonial sceptre in Chinese Buddhism or as a talisman symbolising power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. Traditional ruyi are a long S-shaped handle with a large head , and are fashioned from diverse materials. The ruyi image frequently appears as a motif in Asian art.
In excellent undamaged original condition.
Has its original flat display stand with locating pegs to the rear .

Pair of late C19th Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) carved boxwood figures. Male and female studies dressed in traditional Kimono robes and sandals, with well-carved detail and defined naturalistic facial features, hair-styles and colouration.
The male figure depicted gripping a katana sword in his belt, the female clutching a folded fan, both raised upon ovoid wooden bases with leather pad undersides.
Wonderful patination and finish , with minor rubbing.
